Art Form Fusion — on the spot!

Were you at the Spring Arts Festival this year? horizontal-group-message-smaller

If you were, you heard musicians create music on the spot, inspired by curated works of art (combinations of Ikebana with other visual art). All the artists and musicians are members of our Beloved Sangha.

We heard an excerpt of a movie script and poetry. We were enriched by flower arrangements and photographs and paintings. And we musicians improvised new musical works in response to the visual art.

Both Corey Adkins and I had created some solo improvisations. Then Corey asked me if I wanted to improvise music together. I could not resist.

In the Shrine room, we were inspired by Lisa Stanley’s demonstration ikebana that was in turn inspired by a poem about relationship.

Corey played his double bass and I played my soprano saxophone. Magic happened, that’s for sure.

Well, we’re going to do it again!

On July 12, you are invited to bring your art supplies, whatever that medium is, and “do your art” while listening to Corey and I play. We are preparing some hypnotic Bach and groovy Telemann as well as some crafty originals by Adkins and Grace.

We’ll play a roughly 40-minute set of music with little talking so you can really dive into the aural landscape. We’ll take a short break and use that time to view the creations by the audience.

Then after intermission, it’ll be our turn to be inspired by your art! We’ll select a few pieces – painting, poetry, sculpting, whatever – and fabricate an aural tapestry, or two or three.
