Who Does What?

Shambhala is primarily run by volunteers. Engaging in work-practice (volunteering) is a wonderful way to get involved and benefit others. It is only through the inspiration, energy and talent of many people engaging in work-practice that Shambhala is available as a path, as a center and as a community.

Work-practice is also one of the three components of membership. Members commit to some form of work-practice as one aspect of “creating enlightened society”.

If you’re interested in volunteering for one of our ongoing work-practice positions, or would like to be available to help with projects or events, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Abbey Pleviak. Open ongoing positions are shown below.

See how these positions form our organizational mandala.

For a short article intended to support Shambhala volunteers and leaders, see the blog post Working with Burnout.

Portland Shambhala Governing Council
The Role of the Shambhala Governing Council is to serve as the leadership body for the Shambhala Meditation Center of Portland. All positions with the exception of the Director are volunteer. The Shambhala Council meets once a month and members are invited to offer input, feedback, present issues, proposals or updates. If you’re interested in adding an agenda item, or would like to attend a meeting, please e-mail our Council Secretary.

Governing Council Members:
Council level positions have greater responsibilities attached to them beyond their individual areas, and as such are not entry level positions. Council position qualifications include: At least 2 years of membership and practice within any Shambhala Center; Applicable skill sets and experience including ability to work collaboratively; Inspiration to work with leadership-as-path; Commitment to collective council work as well as administration of individual area. If you are interested in serving on the Shambhala Council, please contact the Center Director.
