The Shambhala Meditation Center of Portland is searching to fill our Operations Manager position. This part time, flexible position allows you to work remotely and have a good deal of control over your schedule.  It is an opportunity to creatively apply a range of skills on behalf of a small non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating personal meditation practice within community and applying Shambhala Buddhist teachings to create enlightened society.  As part of the global Shambhala community, we draw upon a broad array of skilled teachers and an ancient practice and study tradition.

Operations Manager Job Responsibilities:

  • The Operations Manager reports to the Operations Group and works closely with them to define tasks and timelines, report on progress, and solve problems as they arise.
  • Acts as the first line of online communication to interface with the public and the Shambhala community.
  • Employs a range of skills to communicate with members and the general public, including: experience using a database, experience with website and social media management, newsletter production, and program publicity.  
  • Works closely with Portland Shambhala staff and volunteers, particularly the Director, the Operations Group, and the Practice and Education Committee. Works with group coordinators to update and manage Center calendar. (Some training is available.)
  • Manages program announcements and registration, communicates with program participants as needed and interfaces with Shambhala Online regarding shared programs.
  • Maintains records of community activities and provides such information to volunteers as needed.

Wage, Work Hours & Benefits

This position pays $24/hour.  Employee reviews will be conducted at 6 month and 1 year anniversaries for the first year of employment, and annually thereafter or as needed.

The Operations Manager:

  • works a maximum of 10 hours per week, depending on community needs; more hours may be possible, depending on funding
  • meets online with the Operations Group once a week and communicates between meetings as needed

Within those parameters, the Ops Manager sets their own work hours as long as deadlines are met. Free tuition is offered to any local program produced by Portland Shambhala (time spent attending such programs is unpaid).  

Operations Manager Qualifications / Skills: Required

  • Experience working with record-keeping in a complex database (e.g., the SDB)
  • Experience with Google Workspace (Docs, Spreadsheets, Calendar, Forms)
  • Experience with social media and marketing automation platforms (i.e. MeetUp, Mailchimp, Canva)
  • Skilled at time management, organization, communication and accountability
  • Strong writing skills
  • Able to work independently
