Please join us for our 2017 Midsummer’s Day Celebration!

10 - 4 pm, Powell Park in SE Portland

    OPEN TO ALL

Celebrate the Summer Solstice with a lhasang, barbeque, games, and other festivities!  We’ve reserved the pavilion picnic area (SE 28th and Powell Blvd), next to the children’s play equipment.

Midsummer’s Day is an opportunity for individuals, families and children, and friends of Shambhala to enjoy summer fun together. It begins with a lhasang (a traditional offering of juniper smoke) that purifies the environment and empowers the space, the objects, and the beings within it by invoking awakened energy. Everyone is welcome to join in.

The Shambhala community has a tradition of celebrating the changes of the seasons. These are called "nyida" days from the Tibetan words nyima (sun) and dawa (moon), and they occur on or near the days of the equinoxes and solstices. Nyida days are family-oriented celebrations and occasions for Shambhala communities to gather socially. Midsummer’s Day observes the summer solstice; Harvest of Peace, the autumn equinox; Children's Day, the winter solstice; and the Shambhala Arts Festival, the spring equinox. Shambhala Day is our annual celebration of "Losar" or the new year according to the lunar Tibetan calendar.
