Aging Group
The Portland Aging group, Aging in Enlightened Society, is a social group for those who are experiencing aging – whether it be turning 40 or 70. This group meets twice a month on 1st & 3rd Mondays, from 3 – 4:30 PM online via Zoom.
The term ‘aging’ implies elders, and while that age group is certainly part of the focus, growing older is happening to each of us every day. Our purpose is to promote community, connection, and inspiration among people wanting to bring their life experiences onto the path of meditation and mindfulness.
Winter Schedule:
On Monday, April 1, we’ll be starting Katy Butler’s The Art of Dying Well, available new or used from $10 to $20. It’s time to get your copy if you want to join us. Please read the Introduction and Chapter 1. This book covers all the nuts and bolts of staying connected and preparing for both the expected, unexpected, and uncontrollable events attending old age, sickness, and death. Katy Butler is a fine writer and a well-practiced buddhist.
Here’s my suggested reading schedule:
April 1st: Introduction and Chapter 1 Resilience
April 15th: Chapter 2 Slowing Down
May 6th: Chapter 3 Adaptation
May 20th: Chapter 4 Awareness of Mortality
June 3rd: Chapter 5 House of Cards
June 17th:Chapter 6 Preparing for a Good Death
July 1st: Chapter 7 Active Dying
July 15th: Conclusion, Glossary, and Resources
