Our workshop is taught by meditators with decades of experience
David Parker started meditating with the Boston Shambhala Center in 1988, and has been with Portland Shambhala since 1994. He is currently serving as Meditation Instructor Coordinator for our Practice and Education Committee. He is retired from biomedical research, and attempting to shift from doing to being.
Carol Lieberman got curious about meditation and Buddhism over the course of many trips to Asia. She “landed” at Portland Shambhala in 2005 after checking out other local Buddhist communities. She has served as the sangha’s director of practice and education and as a course leader. She’s fascinated by the body-mind connection and meditation’s contribution to well-being. Retired from health care and administration, she continues to travel, garden and volunteer.
Ron Schultz has been a Shambhalian for three decades. He is the author of 25 published books including: Creating Good Work, Open Boundaries, Unconventional Wisdom, and The Complex Buddhist – Doing Good in a Challenging World.
Rayna Jacobson has been a meditating Buddhist and working with her body/mind for almost 50 years. Now a retired nurse and acupuncturist, she enjoys a spacious life and helping others.
Gardner Murphy: “Inspired to meditation practice in the Soto Zen manner, I encountered Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche and students in 1972 and took up practice and study in the Shambhala householder style of meditation-in-action in the context of daily life. Participating in practice and study in group and solitary retreat, online practice, and supporting in-person practice in Portland is my current path of involvement. I think that the ancient wisdom of meditation practice in modern times can bring resilience to individuals and society.”

How it Works
This introductory 2 hr program is ideal for beginners as well as those who would like to stabilize and deepen their meditation experience. We offer this program once a month, on a Saturday morning or a weekday evening, either in-person or online.
The class starts with introductions and meditation instruction, followed by alternating periods of guided meditation and discussion. Instruction focuses on both technique on the cushion and how to integrate meditation in your daily life. There will be ample time to discuss your experience and receive individualized feedback.
Our in-person workshops take place at our rental space, the Portland Dhamma Center, located at 1404 SE 25th Ave, Portland, OR. After you sign up, we’ll send you a confirmation email with additional details.
Meditation is a refuge from wild mind and a crazy world. This practice takes bravery.
