Creating an Uplifted ‘Zoom’ Environment In Our Households

When gathering on platforms like Zoom, we have an opportunity to co-create a practice environment by joining together our individual households into one ‘virtual meditation room’.

When we practice in a meditation center, our practice space is already a trusted container where we know we can engage in the practice fully.

  • Please be as available as possible—our minds open to insight, our hearts vulnerable to each other, and our bodies ready to experience the quality of awakeness.
  • Have a comfortable place to listen to talks.
  • Check and prepare your physical space.
  • Establish a good seat. Use a meditation cushion or a good chair.
  • Take time to tidy up your space ‘360-degrees,’ especially the area behind you that will be visible on camera.
  • More light on your face, less light at your back. If you are sitting in front of a window, you may be completely ‘washed out’ by the light coming through the window. Good lighting in FRONT of you helps everyone see your face and eyes, which is so important for skillful communication.

Relating to Technology

  • Please use headphones or earbuds if you have them for best hearing and speaking quality and to help eliminate background noise.
  • Close unneeded applications on your computer such as extra browser tabs and other programs. This will allow your Zoom to function at its best.

The Art of Good (Zoom) Conversation

  • Be sure to mute your mic as soon as you sign on and whenever you are not speaking.
  • We encourage you to have your video on as much as possible to facilitate relating to each other within the group. With that said, do consider turning off your video while you are doing anything that might be distracting to others.
  • Be mindful when using the chat. If you need technical support or need to leave a session for a bit, please let the coordinators know. The chat will be closed during Teachers’ Talks. The chat will be open during discussions and Q&A periods.
